Make a Difference: One Student at a Time
Your time can help a student build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and discover the joy of learning. The Big Bus is a mobile tutoring unit that brings free academic support and enrichment directly into neighborhoods where families need it most. We serve students from Pre-K through 12th grade. As a volunteer, you don't have to be a teacher or an expert. You simply need a willingness to encourage, listen, and help a student learn.

What Will You Do as a Volunteer?
Every day on The Big Bus is different. Depending on the students who attend, you may:
-
Read with a student or help strengthen reading skills
-
Practice math skills through activities and games
-
Help with homework and reinforce what students are learning in school
-
Participate in enrichment activities that make learning fun and engaging
-
Work one-on-one with a student or with a small group
-
Encourage students, celebrate their progress, and help build their confidence as learners
You will never have to figure it all out on your own. Our staff guides volunteers and provides activities and suggestions based on students' reading and math levels when they don't have homework to complete.

Choose the Students and Subjects That Fit You
We want you to feel comfortable and confident volunteering.
You can work with the age group that best fits your interests and experience, and you may have opportunities to work with elementary, middle, or high school students depending on the program site.
You might spend your time assisting with:
Reading, Math, Homework Help, Enrichment, Encouragement
Sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply sit beside a student, listen to them read, help them work through a math problem, or celebrate when they finally understand something that was challenging.

You Don't Have to Volunteer Every Week
We understand that life is busy. Volunteers do not have to commit to every week or every programming day. Our programming times are listed on our website, so you can choose opportunities that fit your schedule.
While we appreciate every hour our volunteers give, consistency is especially valuable. When students see familiar volunteers returning to The Big Bus, relationships develop. Those relationships build trust, confidence, and a stronger connection to learning.
Even if you can volunteer just a few times each month, your presence can make a meaningful difference.

What Do I Need to Do to Volunteer?
Getting started is easy:
1. Complete a Volunteer Application
Tell us a little about yourself, your interests, and the age groups or subjects you would enjoy working with.
2. Complete a Background Check
The Big Bus provides the background check at no cost to you. All volunteers must complete the required screening before volunteering with students.
3. Choose a Volunteer Opportunity
Check our programming schedule and sign up for the days and times that work for you.
4. Show Up and Make a Difference
Our team will help you get started and provide guidance and activities to support your time with students.
